Empty (2005)
Sound
Under (2007)
Sound
The two sound pieces, Under (2007) and Empty (2007) are from a
series of sound compositions, created from field recordings
of a specific space, whether it is my home, my daily commute
to work or my studio. While the sounds may not be
recognizable, they are hallmarks of spaces that in inhabit
daily. I am interested in harvesting the sounds that are
below our audible perception, and those that are often
overlooked. By manipulating, multiplying, layering and
creating new recordings from these sources, the original
space becomes fractured, adopting an alternative form, and
becoming newly empowered. Its physicality is deconstructed
with this mass’s remnants - the memory of activity that was
once within it. This transition, from the physical world to a
boundless space, in order to form meditative and
contemplative expanses. Components slowly reveal themselves
over time, drifting back and forth in space. It is no longer
about paint and canvas, but about interval of looking, of
dwelling. Through the creation and transmission of these
sound recordings, a new temporal space is carved, for viewers
to explore within the folds of their mind. By re-building a
space through sound, a new mass-less identity is created
viscerally, echoing the degradation of memory through
experience.
